National Trust Weighs In
Story By
Carmy Joseph
|
 |
Saint Lucia may lose its World Heritage Status. That is the fear expressed by National Trust Director – Bishnu Tulsie. The Trust Director is weighing in on what he says is the illegal construction of a private home on Piton Mitan in Soufriere. That home is being built in violation of a moratorium on construction in that area – that status was assigned in 2007 by Cabinet. Earlier this year - the developers applied to the Development Control Authority for permission to build in the area. |
Their application was deferred because of the moratorium. Piton Management Area General Manager – Hennix Joseph – says work began on the project a few months ago in violation of that ruling by the DCA. Since then - a number of stop orders have been issued to the contractor – Leslie Mondesir. Our sources tell us he says he has a Cabinet conclusion that overrides the DCA. Tulsie says a Cabinet Conclusion would have that authority.
The National Trust is sending an appeal the government. They also want the general public to ensure the future of the PMA. Our sources tell us work on the home rumoured to belong to an Italian millionaire continues to this day. We have also been told that a court injunction may soon be filed to ensure it is stopped.

Owners Agree To Pay Workers
Story By
Clinton Reynolds
|
The workers converged on the unfinished property Thursday, demanding answers about their money. The owners of Cap Maison called the workers and the dismissed contractors – Deconalva to a meeting, but officials of the construction company never showed.
Word on the ground was that they were afraid to face the workers. One of the workers – Rufus Mc Lean like the other workers was saying very little about the meeting.
|
 |
The workers are owed for their services from February to August. The property owners agreed to foot the bill for July and August but that still leaves a balance for February to June. The spokesman for the group – Vincent Cadette says all they can do now is wait to see what will happen. There were reports that officials of Deconalva were getting ready to leave town Thursday. However, they were still on island Thursday morning. The contractors were released from the project earlier.
The property owners were also expected to meet with officials of Deconalva later in the day to discuss arrangements for paying the workers. Immigration and Labour officials say they have no power to stop Deconalva personnel from leaving the country.

Story By
Carmy Joseph
|

|
Dr Kenny Anthony says Health Minister Dr Keith Mondesir needs to be relieved of his portfolio. The request comes amidst claims from the Leader of the Opposition that Cabinet passed a conclusion to spare the Minister from prosecution. It is accompanied by a question about the ability of the Prime Minister to grant it. Last week - Prime Minister King - responded to the Opposition Leader’s claims that a Cabinet conclusion granting tax concessions to the Health Minister is illegal. Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet also spoke about |
that concession – he says it is perfectly above board. Dr Anthony says Chastanet should defend what he drafted and brought to Cabinet. The Prime Minister also issued an ultimatum to Dr Anthony – it is one he responded to on Thursday. Dr Kenny Anthony says Cabinet is involved in a calculated attempt to cover-up a breech of the laws of Saint Lucia. He says it is a move his Saint Lucia Labour Party will not tolerate. Dr Anthony also rejects the explanation from Dr Mondesir that the Bonne Terre property the Cabinet conclusion protected is part of his Tuxedo Villas property.
The Leader of the Opposition says his Party will reveal its next step in making the government take action against one of their own in the coming days. As for Dr Mondesir - his response to Dr Anthony in relation to the allegations leveled against him has been - take me to court!

Story By
Clinton Reynolds
|
It took a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers in St. Lucia. But the General Manager of Rodney Bay Marina – Cuthbert Didier says it was worth it. World Cruising Club and the Marina signed a one-year deal for the 2008 ARC, but its future here remained uncertain. Didier says what caused the Rodney Bay Marina to retain the ARC was the major upgrades to the facilities now underway. |
 |
Didier says Tourism officials had a major part to play in the extension. He noted the work of the Tourist Board and the Ministry of Tourism in securing the new contract. Didier says St. Lucia is the envy of the yachting fraternity especially in this part of the region. The Rodney Bay Marina Manager was excited about the development, which he thinks will only a positive for the island.
Expansion work is now underway at the Marina. Plans are in place for the hanging over of the floating docks on September 1 and Didier says already, the ARC slips are secure. |
