Opening of Jazz 2008
Story By
Shannon Lebourne
|
It was the first time in several years that the opening of St .Lucia Jazz was held outside of Marchand. A low crowd turnout was disappointing for the organizers - the Fond D`or Development Foundation. Officials say the crowd at Saturday’s launch was the smallest ever registered for a Fond D`Or Jazz event. Secretary of the Fond d`Or Development Foundation Secadura Alcide says the group had planned for a greater showing. The switch from Marchand to Fond d`Or was not received well by some patrons and politicians, but Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet says, from all indications, the venue |
 |
change did not affect the event quality. He says the opening unfolded in keeping with the plan and vision of tourism officials. First National Bank has supported Fond d`Or Jazz for three consecutive years and was the presenting sponsor for the launch. Sponsorship amounted to fifty thousand dollars. The Bank’s Projects and Services Manager Robert Feverier says the support was aimed at giving back to the society. Fond d`Or Jazz has become a staple on the Jazz calendar. The event received support from several cooperate citizens and the Cuban and Mexican governments.

That teacher – Martha foster – is attending the Sir Arthur Lewis community college completing the bachelor of education degree program. Her project established a library in that school – the first in its history. School principal – Claudia Williams Edward says it was a sacrifice worth making.
The room was funded by the Saint Lucia electricity services ltd – LUCELEC. Williams Edward said their generosity coupled with the assistance of the communications director made the project possible. The library is open to students and parents of the school. It is a permanent project that will be housed in what was the school staff room. Students will have access to books, as well as research material.
