The Opposition Leader says the SLP plans to host numerous town hall meetings across the island leading up to the protest on September 3rd. He vows the campaign for regime change will be a sustained effort. As part of the Environmental Management Fund sponsored project, solar panels have been installed at three locations on the Island, to demonstrate the contribution of small-scale renewable energy power producers to the Island’s main electricity grid. The solar cells convert solar energy directly into electricity. The first pilot demonstration site was the National Trust Building at Pigeon Island. Last week, officials toured the second site – the Vendor’s Arcade.

Thomas Scheutzlich is the Principal Advisor at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Programme. He says the programme is about promoting renewable energy. The Banana Industry Trust is spearheading the project. The Trust’s Executive Officer – Bertram Clarke says the site visits ensure the equipment is tested and project’s commissioning phase is completed. Clarke says the next phase involves entering into an agreement with the Island’s lone electricity company to connect to the Island’s main electricity grid.

The third pilot demonstration site is Campus B of the Vieux Fort Secondary School. The first photovoltaic project was undertaken in 1999 in the community of Bouton. It was the first time an independent system brought 24 hour electricity to the school and community centre in the Soufriere community.
