BTC Report Is Out
Story By
Lovely St.Aimme
According to Social Transformation Minister Lenard Montoute the investigation into the BTC was commissioned out of a need to assess the gravity of the situation at the centre as it relates to the care of wards. The Social Transformation Minister says since the revelations of the BTC report his Ministry has taken action to deal with some of the festering problems at the Centre.

He referred to the report as disturbing in nature and says several steps have been taken and will be taken to improve life at the juvenile facility. The reports of abuse at the BTC have pervaded the media for weeks. Dr. Urban Seraphine – the man who led the investigation - says while no one was singled out as the culprit of the abusive acts at the facility - the institution is dealing with what he termed a troublesome staff issue.

In characterizing staff - the Minister defended the majority for their commitment while also admitting there were a few that needed to be weeded out. BTC Director - Lenard Terrence, says the centre is looking to compliment its staff with the introduction of three more counsellors and two social workers, an activities coordinator and possibly an IT coordinator. Additionally – the facility is working with the Ministry of Education to make provision for the educational needs of the wards at the centre.

A new Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre in Dennery is also set to replace the BTC in 2010. The Minister says that project - estimated to cost over seven million dollars - will represent a fresh start for the institution.

UWP National Rally
Story By

The United Workers Party celebrated its third anniversary with a national rally in Dennery on Sunday. Party Leader and Prime Minister – Stephenson King – and members of his Cabinet expressed great satisfaction at the turnout. So much so that the Prime Minister declared it might be time to prepare for an early election in 2010.

It was a celebratory environment that began with music and shall we say dancing talent . From the likes of Morgie singing the “Flambeau” song and Menelle, Mahandra, Pelay and even three-time Power Monarch Alpha – the Flambeau faithful came to party. At least three MP’s – Castries South East representative Guy Joseph – Gros-Islet MP – Lenard “Spider” Montoute and Castries Central MP Richard Frederick spoke pleasingly about the yellow shirts that flooded the Dennery Primary and Secondary school grounds.

But if it was a rally to celebrate the three years of Flambeau in government – at times it seemed more like the Dr Kenny Anthony bashing show. Two Ministers – especially – made the Leader of the Opposition the primary subject of their presentations. But the Prime Minister – speaking last – summed up the past three years of his government as such.

François On Mass Crowd Events
Story By
Lovely St.Aimee
The Royal St. Lucia Police Force wants the public to be reminded of the guidelines that exist for the hosting of mass gatherings and fetes. ACP Vernon Francois says many persons continue to violate procedure when hosting community parties. He says the police force will be forced to shut down activities – as it has in recent time - when organizers do not comply with procedure.

Francois says the measures have not been put in place to frustrate the public but to help ensure the safety of the patrons at these events. Francois says the majority of hazards and incidents of violent behaviour can be avoided if persons follow the necessary procedures for hosting public events. A number of these events – whether sanctioned or otherwise – have resulted in violent acts including death.

Tissue Lab Opened
Story By

Saint Lucia is now home to two automated greenhouse facilities. The structures – located at Union – were donated by the Taiwanese government. They cost an estimated 2.2 million dollars to construct. Agriculture Minister – Ezechiel Joseph – says the greenhouses will be used to mass produced orchids and a number of other crops.

The greenhouses will work in tandem with the tissue lab already established at Union by the Taiwanese government. Horticulturalist Terrance Gillard says the facility will familiarize plants grown in the lab with the natural breeding environment before they are sold to the public. He says the greenhouses are an important step in the diversification process.

In 2007 – Taiwan accounted for 25% of all orchids sold on the world market. Ambassador Tom Chou says that market share contributed over 200 million dollars to the Taiwanese economy. For him – the numbers speak for themselves in terms of the potential revenue that one plant can generate for the country. A number of dignitaries witnessed the opening of the greenhouses including the Governor-General and Tourism Minister who represented the Prime Minister at the function.

refurbished Rendezvous hotel – part of the Sunset Resort chain. The opening cocktail for the event was held at one of Saint Lucia’s newest properties – Cap Maison located in Cap Estate. General Manager – Ross Stevenson – painted a picture of the importance of CMEx to the tourism industry

One of the organizers of the event is veteran media guru Dr Basil Springer. He says CMEx is as much about the young journalists who attend it as it is about promoting tourism in its many facets. The event was attended this year by a number of students from the International School. It was hosted at the Coco Palm Resort in Rodney Bay.
