Didier Answers Critics
Story by
Carmy Joseph
Cuthbert Didier may be moving on from the IGY Rodney Bay Marina but it is by choice and not because of financial impropriety. So says the man who has worked at the facility for over two decades. Rumors persist that Didier may have been fired from his position as Marina General Manager because of embezzlement. He says nothing could be further from the truth.

Didier does have an eye on the future. He says there is a post – recently discussed – that he might be interested in.
It is a position that would allow him to continue in the yachting sector. But what about these rumours? The GM who is also an economist by training says these are the pitfalls of being successful in a tiny society.

Prime Minister King in his April budget presentation announced major plans for the yachting sector. That included the establishment of a Yachting Registry – already lauded by Didier – and the position of Director of Yachting – that he may have already been tapped to fill.

During April and May this year, the Mexican Government faced an H1N1 virus epidemic. With the situation under control – the Mexican government is helping the Ministry of Health to be prepared – if the virus gets here. Mexican Ambassador to the OECS – Gerardo Lozano says the country received invaluable support from the regional and international community – and is returning the favor by ensuring Saint Lucia is prepared.

The Health Minister says the donation could not have come at a better time. Dr. Keith Mondesir says as the virus spreads to more Caribbean Islands, the surveillance here has been stepped up. Prior to the donation, there were 250 doses of Tamiflu in the Ministry’s stores. Tamiflu is being used to treat people who contract the H1N1 virus as there is no vaccine to ward off the virus just yet. The World Health Organisation expects one to be developed by September.

Farmers Speak Out
Story By
Alison Kentish
Leaf spot spraying used to be done by a company called Pest Management. When that company became part of the Fair Trade payroll, leaf spot spraying for TQFC farmers ended. Those farmers say their farms – and crops are vulnerable to the feared fungus. Some of them say their farms have not been sprayed in over two years – and they constantly fear losing entire crop yields.

The Agriculture Minister says the best options involves getting WIBDECO – the suppliers of the chemical used to spray against the disease - to mix the chemicals and sell them to TQFC. The TQFC’s Managing Director – Peter Serieux agrees. But farmers have become desperate and some of them have resorted to doing their own spraying. Serieux says this violates international standard and the TQFC could lose contracts with supermarkets in the UK if this continues.

Leaf spot spraying has been subsidised from the inception of the banana industry. The government continues to subsidise the program by paying for the monitoring of the disease. Serieux says if WIBDECO chooses to stay out of this, the only option left is to purchase the chemicals from the NFO – at a 10% mark up.

Health Consultation
Story By
Alison Kentish
In 2005, Saint Lucia signed onto the World Health Assembly’s International Health Regulations. That document lists specific benchmarks the Island must meet by 2012. On Thursday, the Ministry of Health hosted a consultation, geared at the development of  a national action plan to meet those requirements. Senior Environmental Health Officer – Parker Ragunanan says Saint is determined to meet the deadline.

There is also another deadline looming. The IHR requires that all member countries should have assessed their national surveillance system at all ports of entry - and ensure they meet international standards by the end of June, 2009. Collin Brown is a Public Health Specialist with the Pan American Health Organisation. He says Saint Lucia is way above schedule in meeting that deadline.

Dr. Alina Jaime is the National Epidemiologist. She says it’s important to bring different sectors together to formulate a national policy for any public health issue. The International Health Regulations govern the roles of countries in identifying and responding to public health emergencies and sharing information about them. The purpose is to ensure the protection of people against the international spread of diseases, while minimizing interference with world travel and trade.
