Mondesir Assaulted
Story By
Carmy Joseph |
The Queens Counsel says he was incensed over a letter that was sent to him on Friday afternoon by attorney Peter Foster. Kenneth Monplaisir says that missive has been sent all over Saint Lucia, the region and the world. It was for this reason this scuffle happened – the Queen’s Counsel assaulting HTS Photojournalist Andrew Mondesir. |
Monplaisir apologized for his action mere hours after it happened. Before it was a number of frantic conferences between himself and other attorneys and a request from a Police Officer of Mondesir to see if he wanted to press charges. Monplaisir also spoke candidly about what precipitated his behaviour – one of the conditions for avoiding a legal case.
Monplaisir is the Lead Attorney representing the government in the Richard Frederick matter. It was the reason he appeared before Justice Georges on Monday morning. The Judge wanted an explanation for the Consent order Monplaisir gave then rescinded and then gave again in relation to the release of three vehicles in the case.
Monplaisir says he takes strong objection to the attack of his integrity in the matter. Video footage of the Housing Minister’s garage revealed one of the vehicles in question was not where it was legally supposed to be.
Additionally – Peter Foster – the Junior Counsel in the matter withdrew from the case on Friday – in a letter Monplaisir says has been bandied around. In it – Foster says he does not want to be Party to the consent order – still defended by the QC. Despite that – the QC says he is satisfied that granting consent to release the vehicles – two belonging to the Minister – the other to his brother is above reproach. The matter – though called up on Monday remains unresolved.

Story By
Carmy Joseph |
The representative for the United Nations Development Fund for Women UNIFEM, Tonnian Bordber, says the focus of the consultation was to answer one important question: ‘How is the Caribbean going to work together to end the common problem of violence against women?’ Bordber says the statistics are staggering. Caribbean countries, she says, have a higher rate of sexual violence than the world average. |
CAFRA Chairperson - Flavia Cherry - says the sixteen days of activism campaign against gender violence will be used to confront the issues of an existing violent culture in the Caribbean. UN resident coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Michel Gyles- Mc Donnough says advancing the movement to end violence against women is in keeping with the UN Millennium Development Goals - goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world's main development challenges.
UNIFEM officials say it’s important that men not be left out of this movement and to this end they will actively engage men’s groups to ensure their voices are heard on the matter. |
