Heineken St. Lucian Open Golf Championships 2009

The highly successful Heineken St. Lucian Open was keenly contested at the St. Lucia Golf Club, Cap Estate on Saturday and Sunday with a field of 120 golfers from all over the Caribbean and as far afield as Florida and Scotland.   OECS golfers came in from Antigua, St. Kitts, Montserrat and Grenada and Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados also had representations.

Players enjoyed a practice round on Friday followed by a Welcome Reception at the club sponsored by Scotiabank and the St. Lucia Golf Association before the main business got underway at 7.00a.m. on Saturday morning.

The weather was kind to the players apart from a heavy shower of rain on Sunday which caused a few uncomfortable moments. The course was in good condition and, as usual, challenged local players and visitors alike.

The most gratifying result of this year's Heineken Open Tournament was the performance of St. Lucia's Junior golfer, 14 year old Simon Reyes, who won the Men’s Net category from a field of 36 other golfers.    This was particularly pleasing because the proceeds from the Open go, in part, to the promotion of Junior golf in St. Lucia.    The Men’s Champion this year was Zeke Percival from St. Kitts whose two day score of 158 was one better than that of last year’s Champion, Adrian Norford (also from St. Kitts).   Kimisha Anthony retained her Ladies title defeating closest rival, Carol Tremblay from Dominican Republic by 2 shots.

St. Lucians who placed well in the Gross categories were:
Romanus Inglis  1st. Men's 'B' Class
John Stebbings  1st. Men's 'C' Class
Peter Devaux  2nd. Men’s ‘C’ Class
Renato Venturi  1st. Seniors 'A' Class
Clinton Terry   1st. Seniors 'B' Class
Lawrence Samuel  1st Seniors 'C' Class
Paul Marshall  2nd Seniors ‘C’ Class
Brad Paul   1st. Super Seniors 'A' Class
Pat Bowden   1st Ladies ‘B’ Class

In the Net category Andy Delam, Ben Gillmor, Gregory Monplaisir, Tom Chou, Tim Augustin, Steve Bartlett, Ken Burns, Sacha Popovic, Betty Green and Colleen Newman were all in the prize winners' enclosure.  Prizes were presented at a Prize Giving Reception at the Club on Sunday evening sponsored by Village Inn and Spa and Renwick & Co. agents for English Harbour Rum.  The St. Lucia Golf Association is particularly appreciative for the sponsorship of Heineken St. Lucia , St. Lucia Golf Club, the Village Inn and Spa Hotel, Scotiabank, Hawaiian Tropic, Blue Waters, Allamanda at Anse Galet, St. Lucia Distillers, Blanchard's Customs Services, Architect CT, Dr. and Mrs. R. Berglund, Construction Tools, Elena’s Ice Cream, Monplaisir Trucking, Buzz Seafood and Grill, Lucozade, Cox and Co., Peter & Co., Mr. and Mrs. W. Lauder, Mr. and Mrs. C. Lawson, The Voice Publishing Co., Café Ole, St. Lucia Helicopters, Campari and Island Villas.   Thanks are also due to all the staff at the club and to Christel Kalthoff, Betty Green, Amy Berglund, Ames Amos, Matthew Beaubrun, Harith Khan and George Noon for their assistance with registration, scoring and marshalling.
